Animal Implantable Heart Rate and Temperature LoggerLeadless, minimally invasive and easy to implant. Long term heart rate and body temperature monitoring.Ideal for long- and short term studies in which baseline, stress and immunology responses are recorded in medium sized animals.Leadless, minimally invasiveSmall size – 11.8gLong battery life – typically over 8 monthsAutomatic stress-free measurementsECG derived heart rate, including data verificationProduct DetailsThe DST milli-HRT monitor simultaneously measures long term heart rate and temperature in the study animal. The data logger has no external wires, which makes it especially simple to implant. It is made of unique ceramic housing and epoxy and is hermetically sealed, guaranteeing biocompatibility. The logger is ideal for a variety of studies including those monitoring behaviour and stress response, in the fields of laboratory animal research, wildlife research, animal welfare and fish physiology. The heart rate is derived from a leadless single channel ECG. As the electrodes are part of the housing the logger is especially easy to implant. The logger takes a burst measurement of ECG at the set time interval and calculates the mean heart rate for each recording. For validation purposes, individual ECG bursts can be saved. In addition each burst is graded with a QI (quality index). The logger is especially useful when a comprehensive data set throughout the research is needed with no disturbance to the animal. The heart rate logger has a battery life of 19 months, with sampling interval of 10 min at 600 Hz.There are two modes for sampling, either at a single interval throughout the period or multiple intervals. Multiple intervals are especially useful when frequent measurements are needed at certain time periods.Using the loggerThe logger and the accompanying items are designed for ease of use throughout the research process, from setting up the logger, implanting it, to retrieving and analysing the data. The logger is supported by the Mercury software and a Communication Box which have to be purchased with the first order. To start the logger for measurements it is placed into a Communication Box and connected to the software. The Communication Box serves as an interface between the logger and a PC computer. In the application software, the user sets the start time, start date and sampling interval before starting the recorder.Different measurement intervals can be set for the same study. This is especially useful when more or less frequent measurements are needed at a certain time period, saving data space and battery. The software automatically calculates when memory fills based on certain interval settings, making it easier for the user to decide how to program the logger. Estimated battery consumption during that time period is also calculated. After recovering the logger, the logger is inserted into the communication box and the recorded data is uploaded to the software. The results are displayed both in graphic and tabular form and the data can be exported to other programs. After retrieving the data the logger can easily be sterilized and reused as long as the battery lasts. Current battery life can be viewed in the software and the user can get an estimate of how long the logger memory and battery will last in a planned research. All Star-Oddi loggers are hermetically sealed and leak proof. Therefore the battery is not replaceable.SpecificationsSensorsTemperature and heart rateSize (Diameter x Length)13 mm x 39.5 mmHousing MaterialAlumina (Ceramic)Weight12gData Resolution12 bits (Temperature)Temperature Range5°C to +45°C (41°F to 113°F)Temperature Resolution0.032°C(0.058°F)Temperature Accuracy+/- 0.2°C (0.36°F)Memory TypeFLASHMemory Capacity699,051 measurements per sensor or 2785 ECG buffer measurementsMeasurement IntervalUser specified in second(s) minute(s), or hour(s)Minimum Measurement Interval30 secondsMultiple Intervals OptionUp to 7 different intervalsMeasurement Options (Primary/Secondary)Temperature only or Temperature and heart rateHeart Rate (HR): ECG Sampling Frequency80-800HzData Retention25 YearsClockReal time clock. Used for connecting to the DST, when starting the logger and retrieving data. DST is inserted into the hole of the box for wireless communications. The box comes with a USB cable for connecting to a PC computer.Mercury software: graphical Windows supporting software for the laboratory and wildlife sectors. Offers various options for measurement setup and graphical and tabular view of retrieved data. The data can easily be exported to other programs and all updates are free of charge.ImplantationDue to the leadless design and small size of the loggers, implantation is simple and minimally invasive. For the best ECG signal, it is recommended to implant the heart-rate logger subcutaneously close to the heart. The DST milli-HRT is suitable for medium sized animals, such as canines, rabbits and more. The loggers can be sterilized and reused for as long as the battery lasts. As Star-Oddi’s loggers contain electronics not all sterilization methods are suitable; this includes methods where temperature exceeds 60°C.Characteristics / Technical SpecificationsLeadless, minimally invasive, easy to implantMeasures heart rate and temperatureHermetically sealed, biocompatible ceramic housingBattery life: up to 8.5-19 months depending on sampling intervalMemory: up to 699,051 measurements per sensorSampling interval: user specified, minimum 30 secondsWeight: 12gSize: 13 mm x 39.5 mmTemperature range: 5°C to +45°CTemperature accuracy: +/- 0.2°CECG sampling frequency: 80-800HzData retention: 25 yearsCommunication: wireless via Communication Box, USB to PCBattery: non-replaceable, non-rechargeable
